Dr. Reg Chhen Stewart

ReggieDr. Reginald Chhen Stewart brings 20 years of leadership experience to the position of Chief Diversity Officer (CDO). The CDO serves as the University of Nevada’s executive level diversity and inclusion strategist. Reporting directly to the President, the CDO works jointly with the three major units of the university; Academic Affairs, Student Services and Administration and Finance and collaborates with departments across the institution to achieve the diversity mission of the university.

“Dr. Reg” as his students call him, conceptualized and implemented the nationally recognized student retention program College life 101 (CL101) at the University of Nevada, Reno that received the 2011 Excellence in Innovation Award from the College Board as one of the top six programs of its kind in the country. As a 2013 Excelenica in Education program finalist, CL 101 was one of 18 programs (out of 165 nominations) to be honored in Washington DC for strong evidence-based outcomes increasing Latino student success as reviewed by an expert committee. Dr. Stewart’s CL101 program was granted United States Department of Education “Closing the Achievement Gap” best practice recognition in February, 2013.

Stewart has been the catalysts in the number of underrepresented students choosing to attend the University of Nevada, Reno In addition to ethnic diversity and reflective of the University’s mission statement, diversity initiatives encompasses age, gender, abilities/disabilities, cultural, sexual orientation, socio-economic and “first generation” students who are of the first generation in their families to attend college.

Prior to coming to Nevada in 1996, Stewart coordinated the alternative testing accommodations in the Disability Resource Center at San Francisco State University and was Upward Bound coordinator in the federally funded TRIO Program at Huston-Tillotson College (now university) in Austin, Texas. An Oakland, California native with family roots in New Orleans, Stewart is the first person in his family to graduate from college. He holds a PhD in educational leadership from the University of Nevada, Reno.

He is married to Lee Chhen Stewart who holds a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction, and they are the parents of two creative, energetic, and wildly entertaining children. Dr. Brad Washington

BradSince 2000, Dr. Brad Washington has had the honor of working alongside newcomer and immigrant communities in the San Francisco Bay Area. From 2000-2002, Dr. Washington worked as an Americorps volunteer in the San Francisco Unified School District. His primary responsibilities included developing classroom strategies and practices for first-year mathematics teachers in a middle school setting, as well as organizing a project to develop Spanish-bilingual libraries in K-1 classrooms.

After leaving Americorps, Dr. Washington founded Bay Area Youth Stars, a non-profit organization dedicated to developing youth sports programs for underserved communities. For 5 years, the organization proudly served over 100 youth from the Potrero Hill, Bayview-Hunter’s Point, and Mission District neighborhoods of San Francisco, as well as the Chinatown community of Oakland.

Beginning in 2006, Dr. Washington honed his focus and commitment towards greater communication and accountability amongst and for underserved and newcomer communities he served at the K-12 level to institutional analysis at the post-secondary level. Since 2006, Dr. Washington has worked with the University of California, Berkeley, the University of San Francisco, and Menlo College as an administrator and faculty member.

In attempting to further understand the meaning of global and multicultural as it relates to social interaction and community, Dr. Washington has presented numerous qualitative and quantitative reports to diverse audiences addressing the challenges and successes of approaches towards higher education. The results of this work included institutional and programmatic rubrics, surveys, and assessments that address school inequity, both locally and internationally.

Dr. Brian Phifer

Dr. Brian Phifer has over 20 years of public service and higher education administrative experience working with diverse students, academic and leadership programs. In 1989 Dr. Phifer upon graduation from Virginia State University served as a Community Outreach Coordinator with the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority. As a new college graduate, Dr. Phifer worked in three public housing developments assisting single-heads of household work on GED equivalency or gainful employment. As a community organizer Dr. Phifer developed three very successful youth groups to deter students from entering a pervasive gang culture in public housing communities.

From 1992-1996, Dr. Phifer served as the Director of Student Activities at Virginia Union University and supervised the operations of the VUU Panther Student Center on campus. Major responsibilities in this role also included development of student programming and workshops, publication of Student Affairs department newsletter, supervision of work-study students, assessment of departmental events and compiling annual reports for the Board of Trustees.

After leaving Virginia Union University, Dr. Phifer received a graduate assistantship at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and worked in the Dean of Students office serving as a graduate Judicial Hearing Officer, while completing his studies on his Master’s of Education degree in Student Personnel Services.

In 2006 Dr. Phifer was appointed the Associate Dean of Students at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. Fulfilling his personal commitment to the education advancement of African-American men, his primary management responsibilities included coordination of the Morehouse College student disciplinary system to include ombudsman cases and judiciary committees. He also served as the advisor to the Morehouse Student Government Association, Maroon Tiger-Student Newspaper and Torch Yearbook.

Currently, Dr. Phifer is the Assistant Director of the Student Affairs and New Student Programs at Santa Rosa Junior College. His overall management responsibilities at SRJC include coordination of multicultural events and associated students and clubs on campus. He serves as the Co-Chair of the Equal Employment Opportunity Advisory Committee, and member of the Latino Faculty and Staff Association. Additional duties include the coordination of the annual summer Welcome Center for new and returning students and training of the Student Ambassador Cohort group.

As a result of Dr. Phifer’s academic and administrative experience in Higher Education he is well versed in developing effective programs and services that meets the needs of underserved student populations. He has successfully demonstrated the ability to make decisions that produce “high quality” results by applying technical knowledge, analyzing problems, and calculating risks. These core skills and qualifications have allowed Dr. Phifer to bring about strategic change, both within and outside the organization to meet organizational goals.
